What Do You Do When Nobody Has the Original?

The annual general meeting was in nine days and the resident handbook still said the bike room closed at 8 PM. It had moved to 10 PM back in March. Noor had the handbook open in front of her, all eighteen pages of it, in a file called handbook_2025_final_v3.pdf. What she did not have was the Word document it came from.

So the job became simple to describe and annoying to do: convert the PDF to Word, free, without installing anything, and get it editable before Thursday.

Noor had taken over as secretary of a 42-unit housing co-op in February. The handover was a shared folder and a phone call. The previous secretary had moved to Lisbon and the co-op email address that used to reach her now bounced.

Then Convert. A progress bar, a few seconds, done. It never asked for an email address. Somewhere in the file properties she noticed the author was still listed as a secretary from 2019, someone she had never met and whose name she did not recognise.

The .docx opened in Word with the section titles as real Word headings, so the table of contents rebuilt itself. The fee table came through as a table. The house rules were numbered once, correctly, from 1 to 23.

Two things did not survive. The co-op logo on the cover page was gone, and a two-column section on page 6 arrived as a single column. Both took about ten minutes to put back.

She fixed the bike room hours, updated three fees, and added a paragraph about the new recycling contract. Then she turned the finished document back into a PDF for distribution. It came out at 4.1 MB, a bit heavy for an email to 42 households, so she ran it through the compressor before sending.

What Noor keeps coming back to is that the residents' names never went anywhere. The conversion ran in her browser, on her laptop, and there was no server copy to worry about, no retention policy to read, no account to delete afterwards.
